Apparently a failing DI cassette fouled my catalytic converter (
2001 9-5 SE) and the engine check light stays on because " the oxygen
sensors are getting a wrong reading" ( from dealer). Service manager
quotes about $1100 plus to replace, however feels I can continue to
drive without any ill effects.

Q #1: I don't suppose there is anything that can clear a fouled
converter ???
Q#2: Will the incorrect Oxygen sensor affect something like gas
mileage or can I ignore until it's time for my next emissions testing
(in Sept 2010)

Comments ??

Thanks

Not AFAIK.

Oh it might very well affect mileage. It probably won't kill anything
though. Try smelling the exhaust when the engine's hot and see if you can
smell unburnt hydrocarbons.

Or even try a competent independent. I've always done that. They've never
let me down.

Presumably means there must be some kind of sensor 'downstream' from it.

But so what ? I thought that was established anyway. I was serious about
smelling for unburnt hydrocarbons, that means unnecessary fuel consumption
due to rich mixture. If the mixture's weak then you'll get
pinging/pinking/knocking. One of my 9000s did that anyway briefly when first
started. The owner's manual says ignore it, the ECU is just 'learning' so it
would have to be long term to be a problem. Long term pinking will destroy
an engine.
