Hmm, ever notice how folks like yourself are experts at unsubstantial
dismissive insults? It's quite sad. If you want to discuss the topic then
debate consumer reports opinion or just have a cup of stfu like your wife
always gives you; either way. >> Stay informed about: Best Used Cars vs. Worst Used Cars |

You are discussing a three year old poll.. crossposting it across several
newsgroups no less... Nothing quite like discussing current events, is
there?
I drive those vehicles *I* choose to drive... others have mentioned the same
to you... yet you continue to browbeat the issue..
Perhaps you might pause and think that those that would choose one
particular brand or model over another, may be less likely to respond to a
Consumer Reports poll (let alone actually buy the magazine).
Did you respond to this poll? Did I? Did any others reading this? If we did,
what would we base our pleasure or displeasure on? Could our impressions be
considered objective?
The poll is flawed... and therefore useless... >> Stay informed about: Best Used Cars vs. Worst Used Cars |

After over fifty five years in the busuness I an assuew you the experances
of others is a useless tool to determine if the vehicle you buy will be
reliable or not, once YOU purchase ONE. When one buys a used vehicle there
is no way one can know for sure how that one particular vehicle was used or
aboused or if it was maintained properly or not, no mater who made that
particualar vehicle, since every manufacture makes some that are not up to
snuff. The best way to choose a vehicle is to forget who made it, and judge
the ONE you intend to buy .

Actually, that poll was published in April, 2006, so it is not quite two
years old.
Polls based on short run data of new cars are notoriously suspect. The
wheels
dont usually fall off, even on Italian cars, until they are a few years old.
The GM cars are rumored to be doing better as far as quality and durability
over
the past couple of years. Time will tell whether they are classic or
tragic. >> Stay informed about: Best Used Cars vs. Worst Used Cars |

The poll is more than 2 years old. It takes time to get the poll results
analyzed and the results in print.

Perhaps because Consumer Reports thought that the Geo Metro was average not
better or worse than average?

I have to disagree with you on whether or not the experiences of others
is valuable.
If you were buying a 1987 model car, do you really think that a Yugo
would be as likely to go as far as a 1987 Honda Civic or a Ford Taurus?
While you're correct that one can't always determine how well a car is
maintained, each vehicle model has specific limitations. If bought an
Oldsmobile Cutlass Diesel, no matter how well you maintained it, chances
are that you would run into problems because of the limitations of the
diesel engine (although some of the engine lasted a long time).
Likewise, if you bought a used 1987 Ford Taurus, your chances of having
many trouble-free miles is higher than if you bought a 1985 Olds Cutlass
Ciera with the diesel engine or a '87 Yugo.
Well maintained automobiles have limitations on how long they last.
If you buy a used car model that doesn't last long, it's not going to
last as long as a used car that is a model that does last long.
IMHO, what you're saying is that how reliable a vehicle is has nothing
to do with how long it will last when you buy it used.

Once again elementary logic evades you completely.
There are many variables involved. AND besides that
"the experiences of others" is a statistical matter.
Once you've bought a machine it might be the one with
an unusually long, or an unusually short, or an
average life. It is not true that all the vehicles
in the historical sample have the same failure/repair
experience. The range of experiences is always very
broad.
Once a person has made the purchase they become a
sample size of 1 whether a person buys it new or
used. Here's a clue.... What was that thing about
not buying a vehicle assembled on certain days
of the week?
You're an idiot. >> Stay informed about: Best Used Cars vs. Worst Used Cars |

I am. I've been driving them since they first came out and once GM started
using
their own engines, I have had no issues, I've owned five over the years,
three pick-ups and two Blazers, and every one but the first one, which had
the Isuzu engine, has gone at least 250,000 miles with no major repairs.
Granted I haven't owned any of the last model years, I didn't like the "new"
body style. The 2.5's were under powered but ran flawless, guess the name
Iron Duke was well deserved. And even under powered a friend and I used to
pull his late model across the Skyway Bridge on a trailer twice a month to
Desoto Speedway, the other two weekends was my Vega to Brandon Motor sports
dragstrip again across the Skyway Bridge. The Blazer with 2.8 with
throttle body was a vast improvement, only issue was the intake gaskets
letting go around 130,000 miles. Would still have that one if daughter
hadn't wrecked it at 297,000 miles. ran it into the back of a 24 foot
delivery truck hard enough to drive the water pump back through the timing
cover and it was still ruining, she had to shut it off. No frame damage,
but the tranny housing was cracked so decided not to fix it. Other wise
would have replaced the sheet metal. Had hoped, as she was the third
generation in the family to drive it, that it might make it to the fourth
generation, she was 8 1/2 months pregnant and walked away from it. And the
4.3 in the current Blazer has been great. 310,000 miles still idles with 32
psi hot on a mechanical gauge, doesn't use any oil between changes.. Tranny
is starting to act up I cant think of anyone I know that has owned one that
had major issues with them. My neighbor has two in the drive way, they are
his third and fourth. His grandson is starting to drive the older of the
two.

That point is also correct. There is a lag. I would be a lot more
interested
in a poll completed after about 4-5 years of service if I were interested in
that model year car. Albeit some cars (one American car maker in
particular)
seem to be able to fall apart a lot sooner than that. >> Stay informed about: Best Used Cars vs. Worst Used Cars |
