Post subject: Car won't rev above 3000?

My car has a ticking noise at idle and gets faster and louder the higher the rev goes, when in nuetral and park it will rev to 3000 and jump up 500 more then back down real fast. It changes gears fine and can go above
3000 rpm when driving in Drive 3 or L ... Idk what the problem is I just drove from Florida back up to Pa over two days and this wasn't happening, the noise seemes to have came over night.

My check engine light came on when I pulled into a parking spot but turned off when the wheels were straight, I'm not sure why that happened bit as of right now the CEL is off
