My friend is asking me for a way to have his car trucked or
trailered from San Carlos, Ca to Carson City, Nv. The auto transport
people in the yellow pages quoted $600 to $800. The possible tow
vehiles are a half ton van and 4Runner. Uhaul says they are to lite to
use a car trailer. The van qualififes for a tow dolly, but tow dollys
have no brakes for Donner pass. Anyone got another idea. The project
is a 1969 F**d Bronco.

College Oak Towing in Citrus Heights (916 332 9203) took my just-bought
'64 Commander from the IM in Sacto to San Diego for $600 on a "when we
can fit it in" basis. We spent a couple days visiting on the way back
and the car almost beat us!
Winter time might bge cheaper.

Try PEG trucking I can not find thier number right now. But I was
refered to them from JP, LA to Phoenix is about the same distance and
it cost me half of what you are being quoted. Deliver time was 3
days.

I don't agree with the 4Runner being too light... I towed my Hawk (3400
pounds) and a Lark convertible on a car trailer just fine more than once.

But I bet you won't get a trailer through U-Haul without renting one of
their trucks.

Also remember that your "haul" will be a round trip rather than a one way,
so you have to factor in expenses for the empty trip.

I suspect you're right, and unfortunately U-Haul is pretty much the only
game in town when it comes to car trailer rentals (in fact, most ANY
trailer). I've rented U-Haul trailers to haul appliances using a
Trailblazer (had to buy an adapter for the wiring harness, though). But
U-Haul refused to rent me any type of trailer once when I showed up in
an Explorer (said U-Haul was involved in lawsuits over Explorers). I did
rent a U-Haul car trailer once, but also rented their van because at the
time I didn't have a tow vehicle available to me.

Hell I got the third degree about hauling a 5x8 trailer with a Tundra. "Yes
I've towed a trailer before.", "Yes I have a Class III hitch... not that I
need it for this trailer.", "Yes I know how the trailer door opens and
latches.", "Yes I know I will not have the same stopping distance if I'm
hauling heavy items.", "Just give me the damn trailer and take my $400 to
rent it... I'll swing by the ER on the way home and just have them put a
couple stitches in my ass.".

I've rented trucks from Ryder and Budget and didn't even get asked if I've
ever driven a truck before, but rent a trailer from U-Haul and they expect
you to have a Commercial driver's license.

Pay the $600.00 to have it hauled. On a recent trip from Central Texas to
Tuson, Az. the cost was $606.39 in fuel, alone. The same trip 2 years ago
cost $260.00. 1 year ago $445.00.

Use the van and go another route that takes you around Donner Pass?

Don't buy it, and look for another closer to San Carlos.

Sorry, but It's not cheap, anymore, to move a vehicle and even something
else from point A to point B, especially where any great distance is
involved.

Call DAS shipping. They did great for me on a Texas to Georgia move for
$535, open carrier.

It's cheaper in the off-season, like now.

Scott, I read the other replies, and I have to agree. Either vehicle
could haul a Bronco on a car trailer in flat country, but braking
would be marginal. Over a high mountain pass? Forget about it. You
could wind up toasting the tranny in your tow vehicle. Suddenly the
shipping looks cheap.

If you are bound and determined to DIY, look at renting a furniture
van or flatdeck truck with enough room to take the Bronco. You would
definitely have to find a secure way to tie the beast down.

Have you got any independent operators with rollback trucks in your
area? Either doing breakdown towing or scrap car haulage? Talk to some
of them, and negotiate for a flat rate plus actual cost of fuel deal.
Just be absolutely certain that someone WILL be there on the other end
to receive the load.

BTW, you may want to get in touch with Fred W. Cook in Redding. He is
on the NG from time to time, and he does do hauling of this nature,
when he can fit it in with his plans. You can probably search the
group on Google and find his e-mail address, or e-mail me off-group
for it.

I live in the area and can tell you, you don't want a light truck to try to
haul a trailer up that grade. Getting to Sacramento would be easy, but
from there you go up about 10,000 feet in elevation in about 100 miles.
Some of those stretches get very steep. Many of the big rigs will be going
10-20 mph. Now that does not even get into the weather problem. This time
of year is chain season. It could be that you would get caught in a mild
storm and have to chain up for the last 60 miles or so. Remember that one
of the sights you will be passing is the Donner Pass. Remember what
happened to them?

Scott,
I just had a 53 Hardtop shipped from Santa Cruz, CA to Houston. The
cost was $735. The same company gave me a quote of $500 to ship my new
CE from LA to Santa Cruz, but the seller and I worked out a deal and he
delivered it. I was happy with the price and service on the Houston
move. You can contact Wade Thomas at Transporting Vehicles. He was the
only guy out of the 10 shippers that I contacted that bothered to call
me and make sure that I got the quote and made certain that I did not
have any questions.

His email is:
wadethomas.TakeThisOut@transportingvehicles.com
phone: 214-256-5713
Good luck,
Allen

Have you checked the better business rating on them? Shady shady when you close a business after so many complaints and open a new office with a clean slate. Have to love being able to check a company out before they take your money.
