GM supplied a phone for these? Interesting, I thought the best a buyer
could do was to have the dealer do it with a local wireless phone
company...

What did it look like? I suspect a handset/base, with the main unit in
the trunk (they were big, about the size of a very tall briefcase, had
about 30 tubes and consumed an incredible amount of power... <g> I do
remember them.

Lets see I believe certain car dealerships did have the right to install
these in the cadillacs upto about the 70's when shortly after the cell
phones started to come out ,and I believe only certain cities had the
system in place to use ,like Los Angeles,New York,Washington D.C.,Philly
was another one and Houston and Dallas mostly they were located where
the money was ,outside of the cities you were hoping you could get a
signal or wait till you got in a position to have access to a stray
signal, Since it was no more than an overglorified radio.
If you find one great lil piece of history since these are the
precursors to cell phones that is everywhere now and owned by just about
everyone.

RadioTelephone was used in remote locations as well as mobile. A few
friends had radiotelephone in their hunting lodges in Tamagami and
fishing lodges in the Muskoka District and north of Algonquin many
years back. I also installed Radiotelephone in several vehicles for
building contractor customers of mine 20 some years ago. One I
remember was in a Jag XJC? - totally hidden installation - less than
6" of exposed wire in the whole setup and only the antenna and handset
could be found, even with a fairly detailed search.
