Can anyone tell me if the 6 cylinder engine in a 1995 ES 300 is an "interference" type where a broken timing belt will ruin the engine? Please respond to e-mail address. Thanks. John
« Non interference, but change it when due, anyway. There are cases of belts going for tens of thousands of miles beyond the scheduled 60,000 interval, but the inconvenience of a broken belt is not .. »

Hey.I have a 1999 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8L. My timing belt just broke yesterday and the car is now at a mechanic. (I refused to take it to the dealer because they have totally ripped me off in the past). The mechanic was telling me that they are going to replace the timing belt first so that they c..
« IF the valves are messed up, you won't be driving the car until they are fixed. Simply, the engine won't work. You're talking about $1000 - $2000 for a $6k car. It is worth it to spend on the repa.. »
« First: When your mechanic used the phrase "messed up" about the valves, he was being gentle. The common consequence of pistons hitting valves because the timing belt has broken is: Engine is destr.. »
« We don't know what the dealer did to have the OP believe he was ripped off. One easy test: If the engine doesn't turn over, it probably is not turning over because the pistons are hitting the valve.. »

I just found an ad in my local paper: 1995 Jetta, 5spd, New Clutch, Sunroof, 2.0L Engine, Good condition, some dings, broken timing belt, $800 I'm curious if this is something I should look into? I usually post in aircooled forums since I have a 76 bug but I like to have heat in the winter! thanks
« Depends on how much you want to spend on the engine job... And the whatever else is broken job... And the next broken thing after that .... Face it a 95 with a blown engine is worth just about what .. »
« ok. Isn't the 2.0 a non interferrence engine? Is it common these are damages in timing belt breaks? »
« Well I paid $400 for a 1996 Jetta with automatic transmission last year. It also would not start. I got it running very well, needed an ign coil, and then could not easily sell it due to body ble.. »

I have been offered a 1993 volvo 960 with a "broken timing belt" in exchange for some web design work on the owner's web site. My question is "what happens to the valves when a timing belt breaks, the engine is still turning and the cam isn't. Is it possible valves have have been bend? or is there..
« You're certainly looking at major engine work. Unlike the 4 cylinder in the 940, the inline 6 cylinder in the 960 is an interference engine. I've seen the results of a broken belt on a few 960s, l.. »
« yes, major work required as james advised.....have an indenpendent volvo shop give you an estimate,,,i would guess $1,000 - 2,000... On Jun 6, 12:52 pm, zoraster wrote: »
