When adjusting timing on an 22R-E engine without a timing light do you
rotate the crank pulley until the notch is at 0 degrees BDTC and make
sure the rotor on the distributor cap points to spark plug # 1 on the
distributor cap?.
When I rotated the crank pulley on my 22R-E engine to 0 degree BTDC
the rotor was pointing above the spark plug # 1 on the distributor
cap, could the distributor drive gear be off by a tooth? when the prior
owner had the headgasket replaced along time ago.
She doesn't start right away and misses/bucks under load specially at
highways and seems to lack slight power. Thanks in advance for help/
replies.

The free repair guide on Autozone.com:
"Engine Electrical" -> "Distributor"
For all engines except 2R-E, set the timing mark at 0. On 2R-E, set
the timing mark at 5 degrees.
Timing Not Disturbed
1. Align the matchmarks on the distributor with the rotor; position
the distributor to align with the mark made on the block. Insert the
distributor in the block, taking care not to damage the drive gear at
the bottom or to knock all the marks out of alignment.
2. Tighten the pinch-bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
3. Install the distributor cap and wires. Check the ignition
timing.
4. Check the idle speed.
Timing Disturbed
If the engine has been cranked, dismantled, or the timing otherwise
lost, proceed as follows:
1. Determine Top Dead Center (TDC) of the No. 1 cylinder's
compression stroke by removing the spark plug from the No. 1 cylinder
and placing your finger over the spark plug hole. Turn the engine
(with a wrench on the crank pulley bolt) until the timing marks align
at 0°, except on the 2R-E. On the 2R-E, align the mark at 5°. A
definite compression can be felt pressing against your finger. Doing
this important; the timing marks also align during the exhaust stroke,
but no compression will be felt.

No, you set the mark to the proper advance and turn the distributor
till the reluctor in the distributor is centered on the core of the
pickup - that will get you REAL close - then you get a timing lite to
fine tune it.

i loosen the distrib and earball it. when it's smooth and quiet, i tighten it
down. a trick i learned from the motorcycle guys.

Aside from other problems causing timing to wander, did you jumpr TE1
and E1 in the diagnostics connector? This puts the system into
"default" mode.
Your underhood sticker may also tell you what needs to be done to
check timing.

I didn't short TE1 and E1 because I don't have a timing light and am
trying to check/adjust timing visually (manually). >> Stay informed about: Adjusting timing on 22R-E engine without a timing light |
