Why is no one suggesting bounced flash provided ceiling is suitable? - or is
that being assumed?

Probably because one should never assume ANYthing about the ceiling until
you've been there.
I'd recommend a Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer for candids and fairly close
portraits/small groups.

I used to bounce whenever I could but that was back in film/SLR days before
I went digital. I use the SLR so rarely now that I wouldn't be confident of
getting the settings right. Good luck with your assignment.

If that's true, wouldn't I be better off cranking up the ISO and using
EC on the camera rather than the flash?

I'd be more concerned about storage management than lens...under
pressure use what you know. Trying out new equipment on a job is not
cool.

Be sure of your CF cards...if you use more than 2 number or color code
them.

Some photogs use a big card for all images, others (more paranoid - me,
for example) use smaller cards just in case something screws up and
some of the images are lost, not ALL are lost. It's bad form to lose
important shots (duh.)

Good luck.

Thanks for your tips. That's the best thing about the Internet
(besides the porn, of course).

When I was shooting my wife's students last week, I did notice that the
pics were consistently underexposed, even though I had the 550EX set to
+2/3. I was fooled by the images on the LCD which looked fine. I
shoulda paid more attention to the histogram. Duh. Thank goodness for
RAW mode as the pics are now all fine. Now where's my gray card?
