Post subject: ABS warning lights...advice please

hi I have an Alfa 156 Selespeed, and I noticed my ABS and handbrake warning lights are on, on the dash, the book says there is a problem with the EBD system, and to take to an alfa garage..........

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong or how much it's likely to cost??

Thanks

You haven't been spinning the wheels in the snow have you? Happened to me
last year trying to get out of our road which is uphill. ABS light came on,
take it for a drive down a quiet road and stand on the brakes. Give it a few
goes, the ABS light should go out.

The handbrake light concerns me though, don't remember that coming on.

Good luck

Makollig.

From what you write I conclude that 2 warning lights burn simultaneously,
the yellow ABS one AND the red one with the exlamation mark.
Together they indeed indicate an EBD problem which can be caused by slipping
wheels in the snow, heavy accelleration with spinning wheels etc.
A simple re-set is to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. Some times a
normal few miles drive will also re-set it.

The red light with only the exclamation mark indicates low brake fluid or
the hand brake is "on".
How is the brake fluid level??
Does the handbrake stick (due to frost i.e.??)

Hi there,

I had a similiar problem on my 164 t/spark - and here's how I cured it :

1. bleed the brakes - total cost NZ$60 for the service + two bottles of DOT3
brake fluid
2. disconnect the battery , not for five mins, but for 30 mins, as this
permits the ECU to completely discharge the capacitors.
3. realise the oldest joke of owning any Alfa - they all have an electrical
problem of some sort, it comes with the territory......

all the best,

Martin
