My seventeen year-old daughter (in another state) just called me and
said that while she was having the oil changed in her car they
discovered the "right front strut jammed through the spindle and
tearing the axle boot."

Sounds expensive!

What needs to be done? Replace both front struts and the axles? Car has
90,000 miles and is a daily driver for her to school and to work.

Thanks everyone.

Sounds like they have a boat payment due. Either that or she had a
massive front end collision that she's not telling you about. Have her
go to a *reputable* shop who do VWs, and not a quicky oil change for
mechanical advise.

I agree with Peter D.

That strut is, what, 8 inches "north" of the spindle, and at least 5" above
the CV boot? The strut is held in place by two LARGE hardened bolts that
I've never seen come loose, and are probably stonger than a weld at that
point would be.

Either your daughter did a "Dukes of Hazzard" jump over 12 busses, or
someone unbolted that strut and let her drive it around, or they unbolted
that strut and did intentional damage to make a boatload of money.

The whole thing sounds VERRRY suspicious.

only if car was subjected some very large potholes. Have her send a picture
of the damaged area. But then again how the heck do oil change techs know
anything about suspension especially when they can't even change oil!

Right! <bg> I forgot to mention that she should not go there even for
an oil change!
