Rust on the linkage will cause a stiff shifter. You can try (key ON but engine OFF) holding the button down and moving the lever back and forth to the extents of its travel many, many times. If it loosens up during this exercise, then rust is the problem. What I might suggest, if conditions are similar where you are, is removing the console, and the trim from the shift lever and having a good look. I had a Chrysler LHS that was doing what you're describing, and someone had spilled a Coke down the console where the shifter was.
