Poor adjustment, or perhaps something is caught in the linkage. >> Stay informed about: '99 Corolla - automatic shifter hard to move |

Do you live in the North-East?
Rust on the linkage will cause a stiff shifter.
You can try (key ON but engine OFF) holding the button down and moving the
lever back and forth to the extents of its travel many, many times. If it
loosens up during this exercise, then rust is the problem. Some lubricant
sprayed on the linkage from underneath will fix it.

Do you live in the North-East? YES!
Thanks for your response - makes sense!
I will try it when it stops snowing.

You can try it anytime. Just go sit in the car and close the door so the
snow doesn't get on you.

A shot-in-the-dark here, but it's frozen or rusted. Frozen is better because
it will thaw out in spring.

Tell me about it! If you couldn't tell from the graphic, I'm in Western
Mass. For a while it pretty much snowed every day (although most days for
only 5 minutes with no accumulation).
Where are you at?
As far as your problem, here it's going to be 40 degrees tomorrow, and
I'll be in the back driveway poking into stuff. What I might suggest, if
conditions are similar where you are, is removing the console, and the
trim from the shift lever and having a good look. I had a Chrysler LHS
that was doing what you're describing, and someone had spilled a Coke down
the console where the shifter was. A good cleaning took care of it.
