97 Ford Taurus

I have a 97 Ford Taurus Wagon and when i drive it seems to "run" high. i dont know much about cars, but it runs at about 2500 to 3000 rpms while i'm just driving it, like it's not shifting up or down? i'm not sure. But i think it's taking a big toll on my gas mileage. Any help?
