I bought this Camry about 2 weeks ago, and while I was driving the car
I had the following problem a couple of times: I push on the gas pedal
but the car does not accelerate. I tried to push on the brake, that
didn't help, then after about 10-30 seconds the car does accelerate
when I push on gas. When I got the car, the Check Engine light was on.
I looked at the codes and it was something like: "Cylinder 2 misfired."
I cleared the codes, the Check Engine light was gone for about a week,
then it came back on, and now it's gone again (disappeared by itself).
When I was buying the car, they told me that the light ws on because of
the oxygen sensor (even though they had replaced it once or twice).
BTW, could this problem be caused by bad gasoline? I live in Iowa and
we have a lot of 87 made with Ethanol - that's what I put in last
time...
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: 97 Camry - engine problem, bad gasoline? |

My Pontiac 6000 did something like that to me back in October. The cause
was the oxygen sensor. The engine lost almost all of its power and was
slowing down, so I floored it, and nothing happened and then suddenly, it
kicked in and all of my power came back. I was just about ready to pull
over. >> Stay informed about: 97 Camry - engine problem, bad gasoline? |

Even though the check engine light went off, there is a good chance that
there are trouble codes still stored in the memory. You should scan all of
the codes whenever the check engine light comes on. The reason check engine
light might turn itself off is if the indicated problem has 2 trip detection
logic. If you are still getting the misfire codes, check the coils and
plugs. If aftermarket coils or plugs are installed, try installing genuine
Toyota parts.

I don't know, but mine did. At the same time the engine lost power, the
service engine light came on. We already knew it needed an oxygen sensor.
When I managed to make it to school that day, the codes were the same,
pointing towards the oxygen sensor running too lean. It only takes $30 and
2 minutes to do on my Pontiac.
