If it only does it during the first five minutes after startup, tell
your friend to get a valve adjustment ASAP, and don't go on any long
drives until it's done. Tell him to have it done on the 'loose' side of
the spec.
He should also write a note in his owner's manual that the valves should
be adjusted every 30,000 miles. If it happens hot or cold (engine), ask
whether he has the ignition switch replaced during the GREAT IGNITION
SWITCH RECALL.
