My 97 eclipse was running fine the day before with no issues. First cold evening and in morning the car started right up, but began missing, making thumping sounds in engine, and gas fumes from exhaust, and then died like it was badly out of time. The timing belt was replaced less than 20k miles ago and inspection of cam belt site cover shows the belt and cams are turning during starting. I suspect the noises heard were the valves being bent/broken. The diagnostic codes of the check engine light revealed, 12, 17, 22, and 55. (which using only the 17 and 22, indicate a temp not reached, and 22 coolant sense high/low) I am suspecting the bad out of timing caused valve damage, but is there any other explanation of the symptoms that would be less severe and inexpensive to fix?
