For over a year, I've had a problem with our 96 Grand Marquis turning over or cranking, but not starting. This seems to happen more often in the morning after it's been sitting overnight (or hasn't been driven for a while) , but not always (and maybe when it's also damp out in the a.m. or cooler ..

I have a 1996 Grand Marquis LS with around 200,000 km on it (~120,000 miles). The car has a rattling noise going over bumps coming from the front passenger side, and also has a loud squeaking/groaning noise (like an old hinge opening) when turning the wheel either with the engine on or off. If ..
« Dried out / worn out ball joints or tie rod ends can make squeaking/groaning noises. You can use a needle to inject grease into the boots of the ball joints and tie rod ends and see if that affect.. »
« My Ford (not the same model as yours) has exactly the same noise. It's the top anti-rollbar mounting bush. I didn't bother to get mine replaced as the noise only happens in hot, dry weather. Repla.. »

« Turned out that it was the sway bar link on the passenger side, which had severed off totally. I replaced both at the same time, as the drivers' side was getting chewed up as well. »

Could anyone tell me the rear end ratio on a 1996 Grand Marquis LS? My differential is on the way out (I was told one of the splines was broken off when it was last serviced, and have been babying the throttle since until I get a chance to replace it). I have a friend with a good condition 8.8 ..
« Take it, but it is actually a "lower ratio" than the standard GM, which give it a bit more snap mike »
« And, also, more thrist for gasoline. »
« Not is one lives in mountainous parts of the country.

« I am guessing 2.73:1 for the standard, single exhaust version, but no need to guess. There is a code for the rear end type (and ratio) on the door sticker. »

Ok, I swapped out my bad diff (3.27 non locking) with a 3.73 trac-loc. Car is running perfectly now, except for the speedometer (of course). This car has the digital dash board. How do I adust the speedometer? Does it still use a speedometer gear, or is the digital dash board input different? I..
« IIRC, you GM must have the PCM calibrated to compensate for speedometer errors. I do not recall whether it can be re-calibrated by the owner or if it has to be done with the scan tool. Some vehicl.. »
