I have a 95 SE with 196,000 km. The truck runs great except for some minor
irritations. I pull a 2000 lb tent trailer most weekends and recently
noticed the complete lack of power. I was pulling the trailer into a 40 km/h
headwind trying to do 100 km/h on a flat prairie highway. In 5th gear I had
it matted to try to keep going 100. Whenever there were trees on the side of
the highway, the speed would increase and I could lift off the accelerator
considerably. Sometimes I would have to shift to 4th to maintain speed. Then
later, in some hills, I had to use 3rd to make it up the hills.
So, I guess it's time for a tune-up. I do all my own work whenever possible.
Where should I start? I have already changed the air filter, fuel filter,
PCV valve, oil and oil filter. Should I do plugs, plug wires, O2 sensor(s),
coolant, belts? What else? The truck runs fine when not towing. Gas mileage
is horrible, especially towing. With that headwind, I could see the fuel
gauge needle dropping!
Thanks in advance for any advice.

you already seem to know what your problem is...the headwind. your obvious
key, trees along the road blocked the wind, resulting in increased speed,
and without trees, lack of speed. with that kind of headwind, I'd keep it
in 4th gear and settle on a slower pace.

Right. But I'm being passed left and right by minivans pulling bigger
trailers and even 4 cyl cars pulling tent trailers and I'm only trying to
run at the speed limit. Also, I did not have as bad of problems last summer.
The truck has lost power and I want it back. A 40 km/h headwind isn't much
and shouldn't slow down the truck so much. I'm just glad I didn't need the
A/C on or I would have had to use 3rd to keep moving!
The towing capacity of this truck is 3500lbs. There is no way I'd be able to
pull anywhere near that with the way it's running right now. Does anyone
actually pull that much with a PF? Anything special done to enable you to
achieve highway speeds?
I'm going to "read" my plugs and probably replace them. I'll do a
compression test and I'll likely change the O2 sensor as well. Not sure what
else I can do. Besides trading it in. I was planning on pulling the trailer
through the Rockies but I doubt this truck will make it. But at least I
would get to visit EVERY gas station along the way!

Change the air filter and fuel filter.
I've towed more than 3500 pounds (68 Firebird on a really heavy trailer)
with an '87 Pathfinder.
And I towed a 2000 pound boat and trailer with a '95 PF about 200 miles most
every weekend
for four years. Fifth gear was always fine on the flats.
But your problem is not about weight, it's about wind resistance and an
engine that's lost power.

Already changed both the air and fuel filters.
