Archived from groups: alt>autos>acura (more info?)

I was recently given a low milage 93 Vigor GS by my parents (it is our
spare car. We also have a 2002 TL)

In the last month the following problems have surfaced:

1. The alarm goes off when the driver door is unlocked (intermittent)
must keep trying to twist key until alarm goes off. Lock
problem??
2. Burning smell when fresh air is used for a short period rather
than recirculate. This seems to get worse the more the heat is
used. Can't seem to locate the source under the hood. Maybe the
heater core?

3. Gas tank drips when filled until about 1/8 of tank is used. I
would guess a leak in the top of the tank or the filler tube.

4. ABS light comes on after 30 seconds and ABS no longer works (this
has been a problem in the past and has been repaired twice under an
extended warantee no longer in force. Never told what the problem
was. with the ABS inactive, are the brakes as safe as a car that never
had ABS?

The car was free and only has 72K on it. Is it worth saving? Any ideas
on the problems, or what I should check.

Thanks all

Burn smell is from the distributor. The seals needs changing as the oil is
dripping on the manifold. The seals are about 10$ and 1 hour labor.

The power door lock mechanism might be corroded setting off the alarm.

ABS might be quite expensive, but it's not necessary to drive the car. One
of the reason of failure with ABS is people who don't change the brake
fluid. I bet yours is black. I changed mine and not a single ABS problem
(knocking on wood). Also, there's a high pressure hose that needs to be
changed that I never did. I should though to avoid future problems.

Gas tank, no idea.

1. Does it have remote locks? If so, stop using the door lock.
2. Is it leaking any oil from the valve cover to the manifold?
3. Or fuel line.
4. Likely an ABS sensor - should register an OBDI code for diag.

If the body is in good shape, definately keep it and fix! And - congrats, I
wish someone would give me a car like that Wink

It does not have remotes. Alarm sets when you lock door (can only use
key for drivers door)

Does not seem to have any oil leak. Fuel? I can't tell

Thanks for the info.

Body is in great shape (no rust 1 dented bumper)

There is no code for ABS.

Honda appears to have no error codes at all for the ALB (ABS) system.

Hope this helps:

My car alarm goes off when I unlock the door. Or (less commonly), the
alarm won't "arm" itself when I lock the door. What's wrong?
The probable cause is a bad door lock actuator switch. The switch
contacts become oxidized and they block the "unlocked door" signal to
the security system control unit. The fix is to replace the switches
(and their retaining clips). The switches are attached to the door lock
actuator inside each front door.

We've also found that the connectors between the door actuator and the
security control unit develop corrosion over time, causing a bad
connection. Cleaning these connectors will enable a good contact between
the door actuator and the alarm computer. The December 02 Timely Topics
article will show you how to fix this

Apparently it isn't a CE code, but a code is stored and can be accessed
using the procedure detailed on this page:

http://www.tomorrowstechnician.com/tt/tt100410.htm

Accessing Codes
To access the codes if the ABS warning lamp is on, find the ABS service
check connector under the passenger side of the instrument panel. It has a
two-wire connector on the end.

Connect a jumper wire between the two terminals (key off). When you turn
the ignition on, any diagnostic codes that are stored in the ABS control
module's memory should make the ABS warning light flash within 10 seconds.

The first series of flashes corresponds to the first digit of the code
(which Honda refers to as the "main code"). After a one second pause, the
light will flash out the second digit of the code (which Honda refers to as
the "sub code"). If more than one code is stored, a five second pause will
be followed by a single flash of the light, followed by another five second
pause before the next fault code is displayed.

After all codes have been read, the codes can be cleared by removing the
ABS module fuse for at least three seconds (key off).

Looks like a helpful page.

Excellent link, thanks. It's in the FAQ now.

It seems when ABS problems set a code, its the ABS light that's turned on,
not the MIL. This explains why there are no ABS error codes that illuminate
the MIL.

Question: Do Hondas later than 1993 call their anti-lock braking "ALB" or
"ABS" on the dashboard indicators?

On my '98 TL it is ABS not ALB, and the MIL has a pic of an engine with
"Check" inside.
