I have a 90 Corolla 4AFE engine sedan with automatic transmission. I
had been leaving this car on my driveway for 4 years and every year I
started it once and let it ran on idle for 30-45 minutes. 6 months
ago, I started it and let it ran and it stopped by itself after 15
minutes, then I started it again and let it ran. This time I noticed
that when I tried to accelerate it a little bit and it chocked and
stopped, then I started it again and let it ran and it stopped by
itself again after 10 minutes. At this time, I did not do anything.
Now, I tried to start it and the engine it turned but can’t start and
sound like it run out of gasoline. I went to the gas station and
bring back a 1.5 gallons of gasoline and fill it in, then tried to
start it again, same problem. I spray some starting fluid on the air
filter to start it and it started and last for few seconds (I believe
the starting fluid all burned out) then it stopped. I loose up the
gas line that feed in the engine block, which is connected from the
fuel filter to the metal pipe between the intake manifold and the
engine block and there was gasoline running out from there, I let it
ran dry and tied it back. I tried to start the engine with the
starting fluid again, and it only last few seconds again. I loose up
the gas line again let it open, then I tried to start the engine to
see if any gasoline come out from there, but it was bone dry.
I tested this with my other identical Corolla and no gasoline come out
from that fuel line either, but it starts and run fine. I talked to
the couple persons and they told me my fuel pump is dead. I would
like to do few more tests myself to make sure it is the fuel pump
before I have this car tow to the shop and let the mechanic to deal
with that.
I don’t want to spend a lot of money on this car if I can fix it
myself. I saw your advice on the news group and I believe you can
help. Any suggestion will be appreciate.

Sounds definitely like lack of fuel, as you already surmised.
you could find where the pump is under the car and have someone else
try to crank the engine. Listen to see if the pump runs while
cranking. If not, your pump is not pumping. It might not be dead,
but you'll have to at least take it off the car to figure that out.
I had a "dead" pump on my celica. I took the pump head apart.
There was a bunch of gummed fuel in there and no way the pump was
going to turn by itself. After cleaning, the pump works fine
again. >> Stay informed about: 90 Corolla 4AFE engine sedan with automatic transmission c.. |

The OP said he could spray ether in the intake and the car would run
for a few seconds.
He also said that he undid the gas pipe one time, gas ran out of the
pipe.
He put it back, sprayed more ether, car started and ran for a few
seconds.
He said he then took the hose off again and no gas came out this time.
He cranked with the hose undone and no fuel came out. >> Stay informed about: 90 Corolla 4AFE engine sedan with automatic transmission c.. |

Paul,
I recommend that you start by checking the basic things that an engine needs
to run - air, fuel, and spark at the appropriate times and quantities.
Check for a strong spark.
Since the car sits for such long periods of time, the fuel injectors may be
varnished. When you store the vehicle, use a fuel stabilizer like Sta-Bil.
They way to check the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator is to install a
fuel pressure gauge and see if the system maintains pressure, and then
supply 112 volts to the fuel pump to see if it delivers the proper volume of
fuel.

If there's a float level glass on your carburetor, check to see if gas is
visible.

IIRC, the 4AFE is fuel injected. (The "E" in 4AFE denotes electronic fuel
injection)

Oops! You're right.
1990 was the last year for carburetion, and I automatically assumed the
OP's car was carbureted.

Reminds me of a scary (and stupid) thing I did once as an 11-year old. I
had removed a motor from one my DC-powered slot cars, the kind that run on
a plastic track with a metal groove in it. I took the two leads for the
motor and stuck them into an electrical outlet in the wall. The motor spun
at what sounded like a million RPM for a split second, then burnt out with
a big POP and flash, and a nice big puff of smoke to boot. The wires were
melted back almost to where I was holding them. I learned a healthy respect
for what comes out of a wall socket!

Lol! Yeah, since we're recounting kid-stuff.... I had the bright
idear to take one of those little x-mas lite bulbs and take the
plastic bit off the end... I bent the wires out straight and stuck
them into an outlet.. WOW! that little light was BRIGHT! And the
BUZZZ was LOUD! but just for a split-second, like your motor running
fast... LOL..
I had lampblack all over my hand and all over the outlet. The bulb
completely disintigrated. I'm sure I'm lucky I didn't lose eyesight. >> Stay informed about: 90 Corolla 4AFE engine sedan with automatic transmission c.. |

Ray O,
I already replace all the spark plugs, roter and distributor cap.
Like I said, I can kind of start it by spraying the starting fluid
into the air filter, so I assume the only problem leave it to the fuel
pump, fuse link, or the electrical problem related to the fuel pump,
but I don't know how to test this problem. If the fuel is too old and
fuel pump is functioning, I would like to see the fuel pump out on the
fuel line after the fuel filter, but I don't know how to do that.
