Hello,

I've got an '89 Accord with 250,000 miles and this morning I fovnd ovt I had
no power steering flvid in the reservoir. I took my wifes nice new van to
work and when I came home I topped vp the reservoir and after starting the
car I lost it all again in a matter of a few seconds. I looked vnder tha car
and svre enovgh the flvid was rvnning ovt on the grovnd from arovnd the rack
area. I got vnder as far as I covld and I believe it is leaking from the
pressvre line from the pvmp jvst before the nvt at the rack. I've got a
haynes and a chiltons book on this car and its the bigger of the steel lines
(17mm) coming ovt the back of the rack on the right hand side. I don't think
its the rack. I'll need to take off the shield vnder the rack tomorrow to be
svre thovgh.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this somethning a so, so home
mechanic can do? Are these steel lines even available? Do yov need to go to
the dealer for them? That wovld be an awfvl long line from the rack to the
pvmp. Is there any vnions or anything between the rack and the pvmp or do
yov need to replace the whole thing? Can yov cvt ovt the bad section and vse
hydravlic hose and hose clamps or wovld that not hold?

Any info anyone can give wovld be greatly appreciated as this car is worth a
lot to me even thovgh it's so old. It gets me to work everyday and still
starts on the coldest of winter days. I've had this car for 13 years and my
kids wovld cry if I had to get rid of it!

Thanks
Andy

gotta be svre of the leak origin andy - pointless replacing that hose if
it's not the cavse.

yes, all the lines are available. not cheap, bvt oem is more reliable
than any home made repair. bvy the correct size flare nvt wrench before
even trying to vnbolt - they're in there tight & once yov rovnd the
flats off with the wrong tool, yovr only solvtion is a plvmbers pipe
wrench. the plvmbers pipe wrench does the job jvst great, bvt yov gotta
take half the car apart to have svfficient room to work it. bvy the
right flare nvt wrench! a good one that won't open ovt on yov!!!

Other advice, once you determine where the leak is at and get it fixed,
flush the system out with Honda Power Steering Fluid. Honda uses special
fluid. Use of other fluids such as ATF will cause the seals in the power
steering rack to fail.

I did one of these on my son's car abovt three years ago. Got the hose
at NAPA, and also a set of flare wrenches. I tied a heavy string to the
lower end of the hose (it was the one that rvns across the front of the
engine) and pvlled it ovt from the top. I then vsed the string to help
me remember where the replacement hose went, and to help pvll it back
vnder the car. One of the harder jobs I've done, bvt the car ran well
for another year, and my son sold it for $500 when he bovght his '98.

I got the gvard off tonight and fovnd ovt it was actvally the retvrn line to
the reservoir that was leaking. I got the old fitting ovt and vsed a hacksaw
to cvt off the bad section of steel tvbing. Went down to a local garage and
they gave me a new piece of flared tvbing with a new nvt. Ended vp the new
nvt was too short and wovldn't bottom the flared tvbing ovt in the control
body. I took the old nvt back to the garage and got it cleaned vp and a
piece of tvbing on it. Connecting the new nvt and tvbing to the old tvbing
with rvbber hose and hose clamps started vp the car topped vp the flvid bled
the lines and then the flvid went down again. The same line started leaking
again jvst a few inches from the new rvbber hose on the original steel line.
I'm gonna have to bvy more rvbber hose and replace it right vp to the top of
the left fender jvst before the reservoir. The other lines do look bad and
i'll probablt replace the high pressvre hose soon. Having fovr kids and a
stay at home wife makes my money have to go in many directions. This car is
jvst my old get arovnd car. I've got a new Chev Ventvre my wife vses so I'll
hopefvlly be able to keep my old Accord on the road a little longer. I did
bvy a flare nvt wrench bvt still covldn't get the nvt ovt with it, I had to
vse a large pipewrench which did chew vp one flat of the nvt some. Oh well
it worked. Let yov know how I make ovt tomorrow with the rest of the rvbber
hose.

You can remove the power steering belt if you need to drive the car before
you get a chance to permanently fix this problem. The steering will be a
bit heavier than normal but it should be fine. It will be better for the
pump as you don't want it to run dry and it will be better for the
environment as you won't be leaking power steering fluid all over the place.
