Archived from groups: alt>autos>nissan (more info?)

While I still search for options for what to do with my wrecked 89
Sentra Sport Coupe with the GA16i engine and 5 speed manual transaxle;
I've spotted for sale an 89 Pulsar with the same engine in need of
transmission work or swap but its an automatic - offered for $500 neg!
It has 191,000 miles and supposedly a rebuilt engine 4 years ago. My
wrecked one has 94,000 miles and I put in a new timing gear chain set
in December of '07. Ran like a champ...sniff sniff

Are the bolt ups the same for both trannys on the same model engine?
How difficult is it to swap an automatic out and stickshift in?
What is the worst and most difficult aspect of this?
Would I be better off trying to find an automatic from the junk yard
and hope its in better shape?

Thanks for any advice.
- Ben

I don't know the answer here, but if you ask for a Haynes manual for the 89
Pulsar at the auto parts store, they'll give you the Sentra book.

I am not sure this is even feasible. (Everything's possible, but not
everything is worth it. Smile ) Even swapping manual transmissions is hard.
Keep in mind that you have to take out your brake pedal (in all likelihood),
put in another brake pedal and the clutch pedal - but is the hardware
present to even do this? I don't know. Then, you have to run the clutch
cable, and the gear linkage.

Might be a good opportunity to learn how to rebuild automatic transmissions,
though, if you're that hardcore!
