OK, next question, '89 GL 1.8: Setting timing

I figured I'd check the timing on my '89 1.8L engine. I hooked up the
timing light, put the pickup on what I thought was #1 cylinder, plugged
the green connector together, and when I went to check, no timing marks,
just an opening in the flywheel cover. Wrong cylinder? Nope...no matter
which cylinder I put the pickup on I saw the same things. No timing makrs,
just a square opening in the flywheel cover.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

May not even be there. Rotate the flywheel one full revolution and look
for them. If not there, then look at the front of the engine above the
balancer. Has to be in one of these two places.
