Hi,

My brother just bought an 87 Silverado. He knew the engine was about gone
so he also swapped his engine out. He went from a 350 to a 305. I'm not
really sure on the particulars on the engine but it runs okay. The only
problem now is that the transmission will not go into gear. It worked okay
before the swap. While working on it we added a few quarts of tranny fluid
to it and got it to go into gear once. We couldn't get any response after
that one engagement. We went to Auto Zone and got a new filter & more
fluid. The guy at AZ said it should take about 3 1/2 quarts to refill. We
put about four quarts in it and it still won't budge. I've heard that too
much fluid can blow seals so we don't want to over fill it. Any ideas would
be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Frank

You probably snapped the tangs off the front pump.

I fully agree. It is a classic mistake in a engine swap when converter
is removed and they not properly reseated. Tranny will have to be
pulled and front pump changed at the very least.

Holy cow!! I might've been right (for once!) SnoMan, I value your opinion,
so it does me some good to see that you think I might be right. I did this
in 1972. I was working with no budget and couldn't get the tranny to align.
It only had to go about ½ inch or so. I got the bolts started in the bell
housing and thought that whatever was binding would pull together. I made
it about 100 feet before it quit. It was one of my well learned lessons.
Back then the pump was only $45.00 and it took the guy less than 30 seconds
to change it. I hope the OP get his fixed as easily.

I have seen this happen twice myself in years past. Both times to
friends vehicles that did not make sure that converter was properly
seated. The best way to avoid this is to fully seat converter while
rotating it by hand with tranny out of vehicle then intalling tranny
and bolting it to engine and then lining up and bolting converter to
flex plate.
