86 DeVille.
The car would go into gear but would not move. It made a sound as if the
transmission was not completely engaged, sorta like a grinding/rubbing
sound. We checked the transmission fluid and it was black and is leaking
(we thought it was an oil leak). We were told to change out filter and
fluid. When we changed filter & fluid it ran normally with no leaks for
about a week. Now it sprung a leak and it's doing the same thing (the fluid
color is going from the red to a darker shade of red). We were told we
would have to change out the fluid & filter several times to remove all
contaminants. This sounds pretty reasonable for now. If this fixes it the
problem long term I'll be surprised. The person who told us about changing
the fluid also said the bands may be deteriorating. I think the bands
(whatever they may be) should be changed. Has anyone else had this type of
problem or know of any other solution? Does anyone know about how much
this could cost and how hard this could be? I'm no mechanic but I can do a
few things mechanically. The car belongs to my son and funds are limited.
We both realize the car is 20 years old and could nickel & dime us to death,
however he's in college now and can't really afford a decent car at this
time. Currently any thing he can afford now could possibly have the same
type or other problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated
