Someone wants to give me one that needs a new water pump? She said her
mechanic told her that the water pump was INTERNAL- ie engine had to be
taken apart to replace the pump, and that it was very expensive. I've
neverf heard of such a thing. Is this so, or is someone getting some
info crossed somewhere??
Thanks

Describing a water pump as "internal" is a matter of degree.

Early water-cooled engines had water pumps that were mounted on the front of
the engine outside of the timing chain cover and were relatively easy to
replace, which was good because they used to fail more often.

The Celica's water pump is behind the timing belt cover so you have to
remove the timing belt cover to get at the water pump, but it is not
"inside" the engine.
