Does anyone know where I can find a readable wire diagram for an 82
rabbit cabrio.
so far as much as Iv'e been able to check out is no head lights (will
flash on when pulled at wheel) and no start.
I am getting spark, but low or no fuel pressure.
All fuses look good but I think it must be closer to an ingition
switch but not sure where there connected. >> Stay informed about: 82 cabrio wiring |

Load reduction relay?
do you have the Bentley manual? they don't have "wiring diagrams" per
se but "current flow diagrams" that's about all I've been able to find
that is complete enough to be usable however.

Run a wire to #50 on the starter. Briefly tap it to the battery pos. If it
starts then it's prob. the ignition sw.

If he is getting spark, then check fuel pressure next. Betcha it is
fuel-related - and given the age, the relay as you suggest.

Fuse boxes can have problems!
Check the proper starter wires on the back of the fuse box. They will be
thicker red wires with possibly black stripes. I forget now!
BUT it sounds like the starter is working since you mentioned you get spark.
So ign switch is a possibility if the gauges don't turn on when the ign is
on.
ign switch has to be on for the headlights to come on with the switch.
But you get spark telling me that there is some power from the ign switch!
You need to tell us EXACTLY what this vehicle is doing or not doing. Give
us a blow by blow of what you do!
If it is only a fuel problem, it might be the relay for the fuel pump. You
could jump the proper terminals to get the fuel pump to run.

Well it seems to be 2 unrelated problems, the not running problem is
the timming belt is half shreaded so jumped time. Easy enough fix
The no headlight problem on the other hand I've already checked the
switch and load relay and there fine, so would I be right in thinking
that something is wrong with the ignition switch.
with the key on I get no power to the headlight switch , yellow /black
wire ( there is power to red wire for the tail , marker & interior
lights only, )

Sounds like a good guess, ign. switches on VWs are not very robust, can
you find where column connects to harness and backprobe connector to
confirm?

NOT the ign switch IMHO but like Nate said backprobe connectors to confirm
and do it to both switches!
The headlight switch should get power ALL of the time and not through the
ign switch.
So after you change out the timing belt, and I was "shocked" you got sparks
<g>, check out the wiring at the battery and at the fuse box.
BTW how did you check out the headlight switch? Ohm meter checking since it
commonly goes bad too?

I'm pretty sure the A1s/A2s I've messed with (two 84's, an '86 and an
'89) only got power to the headlights with the key in "on" position,
making me think that it went through the load reduction relay. Not sure
if '82 is different or not.

Not sure but I think the headlight SWITCH gets power all of the time and
then to the headlights via a relay energized when the ign is on.
Power would feed the running/parking lights even without a key in the car.
I could be wong though and will have to check the Bentley!

There is power to the headlight switch all the time thru an 18 gage
red wire thats for the tail/marker and dash lights but the head lights
themself does come from the ignition switch and has to be in the on
position to be on.
As far as testing the headlight switch I put power to the one side and
clicked the switch on and got headlights
I guess I'll tear into the ignition switch next >> Stay informed about: 82 cabrio wiring |

100% right!! The load relay is turned on by the ign.sw. which powers the
headlights etc. On starting it's turned off so all the battery power goes to
the starter, ign etc.
