And my alarm has been triggered.

Ooops.

Anyone know how to get the bonnet open?

I've tried pulling the grille off, but something holds it in around the
catch. Short of taking a blade to the grille and cutting it away, I
can't see what to do.

Oh dear! Don't know if this helps, it does explain how to get the grill
off the 75/Milano.

Yup, that's just the job, cheers.

It can wait 'till the weekend, though, 'cos the battery is now flat and
the alarm has gone quiet.

Probably too late with this, but...
To get the grill off, there is a screw behind the Alfa badge. Undo that
and the grill is kept on with four press-on connectors (two either
extremity). Then you can get to the lock mech easily.
