I recently acquired a pristine 71 mercedes 220. Its been stored in a shed
for the last 17 years. Its perfect top to bottom, inside and out but its got
a bad ticker. A rebuilt mercedes 4cyl is out of the question due to the cost
of the engine (3k just for a longblock). Im thinking about a 302, 350 or
maybe a v6. Anyone done anything like this? Will the suspension hold the
weight? I dont care if the gauges work, ill add a new cluster if I need to.
I just want it to run. We may even take the top off.. make it a 4 door
cabriolet (after appropriate frame modification)

Anyone have any tips?

We just did a 68 250 with a 350TPI and 700r it is a tight fit and a pain
but most conversions are . I thought most of them had 6 cyl ? Not an import
guy but got stuck doing this one anyway and next the guy is talking hotrod
Rolls . The 700 was a pain to fit and tight also as with the weight I had
recommended a 200r but no, so the tunnel was cut . Gages were simple as we
just replaced the tac and speedo with Autometer ,direct fit . As for the
suspension I can not say since on this one someone in the past had added a
70's Camaro clip to the front and hung the Camaro rear out back . Now I have
no clue on your model but this thing never had a frame under it as it's
unibody .The customer asked about 4 link but changed mind after pricing back
1/2ing the car, since there is no clearance and no mounting structure .

well there a couple 4 cylinders that is a good swap in ,one being the
tried and true ford 2.3 that thing has been modified and used in
everything from street cars to race cars and there are performance parts
avaible for them the best ones to get is either the ones from the
rangers or bronco II they are heavier built and have a better
compression (it has 9.5 to 1) and you can get 4 barrel intakes for them
or use a conversion from racer walsh in florida and use a efi injector
intake that once you unbolt the upper plenum it looks like a 4 barrel
intake ,
now a second choice is the 2.2 out of the S-10 it has plenty of torque
and they are inexpensive and you can get the computer setup pretty easy
too and if you do some upgrades you can get upto about 250 HP out of it
naturally aspirated since the stock hp is 180 and just the addition of
a supercharger you can get about 250 to 270
out of it in street trim ,hope this has helped you to know you have
other alternatives .
good luck
