Post subject: re. 406 trip computer

I thought I would start another thread like this to get your attention.

Thanks for the info the last time it was very usefull and was spot on.
I sort of gave up on getting the trip computer to work but lately I've had some spare time so decided it give it another attempt.

Before I go ripping into the wiring harness, if you don't mind, I would like to pick your brains a bit more.

1. You mentioned a wire 1368 from pin 4 of the ECU. I also have the Bosch MP5.1.1 ECU. You said on your car wire 1368 went to under the battery. I found two big circular connectors under the battery on my car. The grey on has a bunch of wires that a all red and one that is grey or brown.
Am I looking in the right place? Is wire 1368 one of the red wire?
Where did you take the wire through the firewall into the cabin, without it looking like a add-on?

2. On the connector to the display there is place for 15 wires. I have the first 10 wires and the 15th wire the rest are missing. From the Haynes manual I see I need to add two wires to the instrument cluster. Did you need to add these wire? Details?

3. By changing the setting on the side of the display unit I get extra info on the display but still no actual data. Pressing the button on the wiper stalk still does nothing. I have checked the wires do go to the stalk. I assume this is because the other wires are still missing?

4. The wires to the radio are there I checked but there is no radio info displayed is this because my radio already has a display on it and it will therefore not display on the trip computers screen?

I've seperated the questions into seperate points to make it easier for you to answer. Any further help will be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Ryan

The above post is specifically for the attention StevieWonder as he answered/helped me the last time.
It seems that all such references have been removed??

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Ryan - just picked up on your new thread. Are you still needing more info
on installing the 406 Trip Computer or have you managed to do it? Happy to
post more info if you need it...

Hi Stevie,
I tried to contact you a good few months back concerning some info you had posted about getting the trip computer to work on a 406.
Thanks for replying.
I've got a 1800 16v SL.
I got as far as getting the temperature display to work in, Degrees C and then sort of gave up from there.

I think you mentioned that on your car there was a wire missing that you had to run from under the battery to the computer. I had a look under the battery but there was a massive amount of wires under the battery and I couldn't find the right wire, you did mention the number on the wire and where it was to connect to. On my car,If I remember correctly, all the wires under the battery were the same colour.

While I was fiddling I managed to some how stop the central locking working and that almost gave me heart failure. It turned out to be some dodgy connections caused by the previous owner cutting into the wiring harness to connect an alarm system. After that I decided to stop fiddling with the wiring.

I've in the meantime had issues with the speedo that I've only just resolved it turned out to be the speedo sender unit on the gearbox.
BTW the D9 sender works on a D8 and costs a lot less.

Back to the trip computer, I have the temp displayed and a few other symbols but no actual info. I've tried the switch on the side of the unit, that changed what symbols were displayed, but still no actual info.
I have the computer stalk switch but the display doesn't respond at all which seems a bit odd.

So if you could shed any further light it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Ryan

Ryan – sorry for delay!

First thing – what connector do you have going in to the back of the trip computer? It needs to be a double 15 terminal connector. If you only have a single 15 connector then that is a problem already. I only had a single 15 connector in my car but managed to get another single one from a wreckers and join them together (after cutting some lugs off) so I would have access to all 30 terminals on the trip computer.

It does sound like your wiper switch isn’t actually connected to the unit. One wire in the switch needs to connect to terminal 5 on the bottom row of the unit (numbered from left to right) and the other needs to connect to earth. You will need to check if this wiring is in place.

Terminal 2 on the bottom row needs to connect to earth.

Terminal 10 on the bottom row is for speed data input. For this I spliced a wire into the speed data wire that goes into the instrument panel. On my car this wire is a brown wire, numbered 465 and enters the instrument panel through terminal 21 of the large yellow connector on the back of the panel. I took the connector apart to make sure I got the right wire and used a red ‘scotchlock’ connector to splice in to it.

Terminal 12 on the bottom row is for fuel flow data input. This needs to be connected to the main ECU in the engine compartment. On my car, which has a Bosch MP5.1.1 system, I spliced in to the wire coming from terminal 4 on the ECU, numbered 1368. Although I found this wire did lead to a connection block under the battery, I decided to splice into it near where it came out of the ECU. It did mean stripping back the connector, again to make sure I had the right lead and also to be able to splice into it. From here I took it through to the gap where the wiper motor sits, passing it through the same hole as the wiper motor wiring. Then took it along to the air blower inlet and dropped it through to the passenger footwell, making sure it was clear of the blower blades.

Terminals 13 and 14 on the top row of the unit are for the fuel gauge data. For this you do need to cut the wire that comes from the fuel gauge. On my car this wire again enters the instrument panel through the large yellow connector at terminal 11. It is a brown wire, numbered 4315. It needs to be cut (not too close to the instrument panel!) with the end from the fuel gauge connecting to terminal 14 and the end from the instrument panel connecting to terminal 13. You will obviously have to extend the wires to reach the trip computer.

There is one other connection that is shown on the Haynes diagram, which is connecting terminal 6 on the bottom row of the unit to terminal 15 on the yellow connector on the instrument panel. It is still a mystery to me what this lead does as everything seems to work fine without it. It is labelled as lead 4310 on the diagram – the 43 prefix means it is to do with fuel data, but all it seems to do is connect to a defunct bulb socket on the instrument panel.

I assume you already have all other wiring needed as you have your temp display working. You will need to adjust the little switch on the side of the unit once all wiring is in place, depending on whether you want stereo information displayed also.

It is a bit of a project but very worthwhile once it’s all working! Let me know if you need any further info!

Steve

Steve thanks for the reply.

I only have the one connector so I'll have to start with getting the second connector.

Sounds like a lot more than I was anticipating.
