Alright I have an 85 c10 had a 305 and just dropped a 355 in it. I
took the tranny off of the 305 and it leaked a little of course, but I
used a newer torque converter off of a th 400 I have. Aslo the 350
leaked at the gasket so I dropped the pan and changed the gasket and
filter. Would have used the 400 but the drive shaft is too long. So I
fire it up for a while and mess with the idle and timing so it ran for
a while. The next day i fire it for a while and then realize I never
added more fluid. Since then have added 8 qaurts to it and it want
drive. I never put it in gear with it being low. It just idled a long
time with no fluids. Do you think that it is burnt up?

The newer 400 torque convertor may be the problem - might not be engaging
the tranny fingers properly.

If the 400 is a good tranny, it might be a lot less hassle to have the
driveshaft shortened and just use it. That's a pretty tought tranny in
my experience. You didn't mention whether your truck is 2x4 or 4x4 so
I'll assume since you're posting in a hotrod group it's a 2 wheel drive
truck.

I also agree with Eugene that the 400 converter might not be playing
well with the 350 trans. TH350 and TH400 are not the same animal, even
if the input shaft & bell housing might look the same.

Cheers,
- Jeff G

yes it is a 2wd short bed. I know if I was to buy a new stall they say
both 350 and 400, say from b&m or tci. The 400 ran as well it just
leaked. I"m not to sure of the 350's year but the truck, is 85 and I
know the motor wasn't original and the 400 was out of an 86.

Unless both trannies are pre-1981, you got the wrong converter.

It is possible that when you put the tranny back together that the torque
convertor fingers were not engaged on the tranny input properly. You have
to wiggle the output shaft while pushing the tranny onto the torque
convertor/flywheel before bolting the bell housing together.
