I think I did a baaad thing! Driving home from a 3 hour drive and
outing in my 2003 new 330i with only 600 miles on the odometer, I
came to a stop at a red light. With my foot on the brake and the lever
in drive I soon became aware that the engine was racing. Perhaps as
high as 4000rpm before I switched into neutral without change and then
park, engine still racing. Finally in desperation I shut off the
ignition. After restarting everything returned to normal. I realize
now that my size 12 running shoe was probably straddling the brake and
gas pedal. The firmer I pressed down on the brake, the higher the
engine rpm. One, did I do any lasting harm, and two, is there is
transmission shut off that the computer employs under such bizzare
circumstances. Even at 4000rpm lifting the foot sightly off the
brake/gas only allowed the car to move forward carefully. There is not
a good deal of space between the brake and gas pedals and it is
something to be concerned about, especially for Mr. Big Foot.

If there's no difference in the way it shifts or drives, I sincerely doubt
you did any damage at all.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Known colloquially as the "brake stand" it is a technique of fun for children
at heart the world over!

We used to do those in my friend's mustang GT...

Worst thing that happened your brakes held the car, and the rear wheels spun
slowly - wearing a bit of rubber off.

No worries mate!

to add my 0.02c - torque covnerters normally lock up much lower than
this 2000ish? i.e. you can't rev the engine more than that with the
car in gear. That is, unless you broke something major & the fact
that you drove away suggests not. It's a test on autos to do this to
check correct operation (in general). I suspect that the car realsied
you were stationary and shifted you into neutral.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
