BMW 325es Backup lights

Quick question... I have a 1986 325es, and the backup lights don't work...
by process of elimination, I'm pretty sure the switch is bad (or else the
wires going right to the switch. I pulled apart the center console, and
found that the wires go down... to where I can't get them, so I'm pretty
sure I have to get to the switch (which I know is located on the
transmission, from reading some old posts,e tc)... by jacking the car up. I
did this, and can't seem to get at it... has anyone else had to do this? or
anyone have any input of how I can get to the switch?
