Hello!
I'm considering buying a new BMW 320d.
I heard that the 320d engine has low power in the lower revs, and
that you have to push it past 3000 rpm to have some real push.
Is this true? Because from the technical specifications I can see that
it has a high torque at relatively low rpms...
Thanks for any info,

Have you test driven it?

Try it yourself. Sometimes friend's opinions are biased. Do you know what he
compares it to? If 320d is compared to 330d, it will quite likely have less
low end torque If he compares it to some older normally aspirated
diesels, new turbo diesel may feel weak close to idling rpm. That is just
typical. Of course, these new turbo diesel have twice the torque at higher
rpms
So, try it yourself and try to ignore what the others say. You are buying a
car for yourself anyway!
(and no, I do not have 320d

My guess is that your friend meant a 320i, to which this statement perfectly
applies.
Any modern turbo-Diesel I know of already looses power at 3000 - 3500rpm.
As you can see with the peak torque value: it aplies at or even below
2000rpm or so. Just take a test drive to find out yourself.
Just my two cents.

The 320d has plenty of low-down torque and is good up until about 4000 revs.
I test-drove it and was very impressed..... but got greedy and bought a 330d
instead......... awesome!

Jason - when run in, chip it to about 240 bhp / 370 ft lbs - VERY awesome !!
Costs about £400, is apparently well within safe limits for transmission and mine has
been fine for 20,000 miles on a 530D.

Well I do and I have to second Zon - try it for yourself! The engine is very
torquey starting at 1500rpm with a nice flat line of 330 Nm from 2000rpm to
about 4000rpm.
There is a difference however between the 150pk 320d and the 136pk, the
previous version, which is a lot less torquey at lower than about 1800rpm.
I absolutely love my 320d, by the way...

Ciao Miguel,
All engines made by Bayerish Motoren Werke give 80% of the max torke around
2000 rpm (and lowest for V8 & V12).
But don't waiting from your Diesel for "GT" performance... High precision
mecanism to handdel with care !
