Post subject: 300E shifts hard

I just bought a 1989 Mecedes 147000 miles on it Very clean car runs well so far but it shifts a bit hard from 1st to 2nd gear. Is that normal?
Also- where should the Temp gauge stabilize after warm up in summer weather?
