I remember way back when there are a stock class drag racer with a station
wagon and 283 (I believe). He used to rev it up to 10,000 rpm and dump the
clutch to launch.

IIRC, and maybe someone can verify this, he had modified some parts, used
the best bolt/stud hardware and just generally did a super blue-print on the
basic stock engine.

400 HP on a 283 is 1.4 hp/ci and isn't that hard to do, but it will happen
above 6000 rpm for sure naturally aspirated.

Probably the mostest for the leastest would be a Paxton/Pro-Charger etc.
type supercharger setup and a really good bottom end rebuild. A SCAT-9000
steel crank, some good forged rods/pistons with some later model heads and
all ARP hardware should work great and keep the whole thing under $7000 or
so.

Why not stop there. put the original in a corner of your garage
and drop in a crate 350/383

Lots easier and you can keep your 'numbers match' 283
all original

what about one of the 290 hp crate 350s out of summit or a place like
that. would it be alot easier to increase that hp etc?

Yes, exactly. Maybe even a crate 383 small block.
It is easy to get one of them to have 400 HP and still
have torque at real world driving RPM.

I don't see why one would screw up an original 283
or start with something that small when a small block 383
is going to start with an extra 100 HP without working.

Unless there is some racing rule that requires it,
cubic inches rule for cheap and robust power.

That being said, there may be some of you who remember a project
some years ago where the 283 was bored OUT and sleeves fitted to a
displacement of 467 cubic inches (I believe I remember the figure
correctly.)

This was an extreme overbore and I don't recommend it, but that little
block had a lot of potential.
