I just bought a brand new 2007 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Package. Great
truck, but when I get it up to 75-80 mph on the freeway, it exhibits
a
weird, intermittent whining sound. It is clearly caused by wind noise
(not a mechanical issue), and only when a strong side gust hits. It's
a very loud noise and sounds like when you put a blade a grass in
between your palms and blow. I can't pinpoint the location, but it's
definitely coming from the front end (maybe the front passenger
side).
Has anyone else every experienced this? I would take it into the
dealership, but to reproduce the noise I have to get the truck up to
75 mph--a tough task without getting pretty far out of Atlanta traffic. >> Stay informed about: 2007 Toyota Tacoma--High Pitched Whine |

I did not see any service bulletins for this condition, and unfortunately,
noises are difficult to diagnose without hearing them first hand. I would
take it back to the dealership.

I had the same problem with my 2000 Avalon. Never could find the
source, I'm sorry to say. Like yours, it would occur at high speed with
a strong side wind. Here's hoping you have better luck finding yours!

Since you said the noise is connected with gusts of wind, and your blade of
grass analogy is a good one, I'd take a very close look at the body trim for
any gaps due to bad fasteners. In particular, look at trim that fits
differently on one side of the truck vs the other. >> Stay informed about: 2007 Toyota Tacoma--High Pitched Whine |

Exactly the same problem with a 2005 Corolla. The blade of grass analogy
is very accurate. It only does it only in a strong head wind or wind
gust, sometimes passing semi-trailers. I have not been able to track it
down. It does sound like it comes from the firewall vent or windshield
area. It's hard to pinpoint when driving and I don't have access to a
wind tunnel. >> Stay informed about: 2007 Toyota Tacoma--High Pitched Whine |

Try driving a speed with the radio antenna removed.

It was windy enough outside today to be able to diagnose it better than
I have been able to in the past. It was making the noise continuously
for a few minutes. I was traveling around eighty mph.
It seems to be coming from the upper windshield area by the rear view
mirror mount, where the windshield is next to the roof panel there is
the windshield rubber molding.
I'm going to try driving it with a piece of tape across the rubber
molding. The molding is designed with a groove in it which may be the
reason for the noise. >> Stay informed about: 2007 Toyota Tacoma--High Pitched Whine |

Found it! Mike was right--the problem was with the radio antenna. I
noticed the other day that when the whine was happening,
the radio antenna's oscillations in the wind became very tight--almost
a blur. I removed the antenna and the problem stopped.
I thought the spiraling on these new antennas was supposed to STOP
road noise? Anyway, I'm either going to get some cheap
replacement antenna that can be manually retracted (like the old 70's
cars) or just rig a new antenna that automatically extends
and retracts with the radio.
Thanks for all the input! >> Stay informed about: 2007 Toyota Tacoma--High Pitched Whine |

Take a piece of black electrician's tape and put a tab on the antenna
about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the rod. That will dampen out the
oscillation and fix your problem on the cheap. You might have to move
the tab of tape up or down a bit but it will work.
