| I have one master (black) transponder key for a 2005 Sienna and would
like another key. Local locksmith's want $80 to make the key and
program it. I've seen posts that say "self-programming" may be
possible in a 2005 Sienna and others that say it requires a special
tool. Is it possible to buy a key from eBay and program it myself?

There are 2 parts to the key, plus the keyless entry function if the vehicle
is so equipped.
The first part is the physical key with teeth that fit into the lock.
The second part of the key is the chip - transponder chip in the key.
Without the correct chip-transponder, the door locks and ignition switches
will turn but the engine will not start.
It is possible to program the keyless entry functions of the key yourself,
i.e., lock, unlock, etc. if you have a working key.
Programming the transponder chip requires special equipment.

What Ray said.
My daughter has a BMW that has a transponder built into the key, and for
whatever reason the transponder died while she was out somewhere and the car
would not start. It would not even turn over. The door would lock and
unlock, the ignition would turn, but no effort to start could be summoned.
The tow truck brought her car home. I screwed around with it for 20 minutes,
or so, and tried a different key. Viola! She had to buy a new key -- the key
I used did not support the keyless entry system, no buttons.
The key I used also did not have a chip inside, as far as I can tell. That
is, there is no means of installing a battery and no buttons or anything
like that. I suppose the chip does not need a power supply that requires
replacement every so often.
The chip works much the same as the tags they put on stuff at the store so
the alarms sound if you get past a cash register without paying. The car has
to be taught to recognize the new chip as a friendly one so that the
ignition bypass circuits will allow the car to start. >> Stay informed about: 2005 Sienna Transponder Key |

I am pretty sure that all modern vehicles sold in the U.S. have a
transponder chip in the keys. The chips do not need a battery, but keys or
key fobs with keyless entry do require batteries.

What kinds of scenarios would make a key stop working, as in my daughter's
case. She drove the car somewhere and parked. On the next START cycle, it
would not start. We determined that the key was not talking to the car, but
I never figured out why it stopped. The other key for the car worked fine,
and the new key works fine, so the car is okay. The problem is clearly with
the key, what kinds of conditions would cause it to fail? >> Stay informed about: 2005 Sienna Transponder Key |

If the key works like the loss prevention devices. Could it be possible to
disable the Ignition Key by placing it on the cashier counter, where you
should not put your wallet on? >> Stay informed about: 2005 Sienna Transponder Key |

Your owner's manual will describe how the chip works. The chip is embedded
in the plastic head of the key.

Any buttons that the key might hold are there to support the entry system.
The key that has no buttons has to be inserted into a lock to operate it, or
them if the locks are electrically linked together. Once the doors are
opened, the key is inserted into the ignition switch, and there is a ring
around the ignition that is able to read the chip imbedded into the head of
the key.
The idea is that if a bad guy gets into the car, he won't be able to drive
it away unless he has the correct key. He can't simply jimmy the lockset as
in years gone by. >> Stay informed about: 2005 Sienna Transponder Key |

The battery is available at the drug store -- Rite Aid, Wallgreens, the
watch department at Target, and so on. It is the same as is commonly used as
the battery in your computer to keep the time and date, and other kinds of
information, while the computer is off.
The chip, if equipped, requires a plastic head on the key. >> Stay informed about: 2005 Sienna Transponder Key |
