The 2003 SL500 and all Mercedes from 2004 to
2006 can not be imported into Canada from the US .
They are not on the Canadian list of the cars that can be imported
into Canada.
The 2002SL is on the list and the 2003 500SLR is also on the same
list.
Any body knows the reason why the 2003SL and all Mercedes from 2004 to
2006 are excluded?

Why not ask Transport Canada? I'm sure they are delighted to help you
with the questions...
http://www.tc.gc.ca/ is for Transport Canada.

They call back
The listing of the cars as importable, is the manufactures
responsibility.
Consequently, if the car isn't listed, a letter from the manufacturer
is required, stating that the car meets Canadian standards.
Also, importing a defective car, like with water damage (Katrina) may
or may not be approved by the province. Suggested call the Government
of that province for more information.
There is probably al loophole in the law. Import it into one province
and then transfer it to another. One has to pay taxes twice.

Ok, this makes sense now.
If you read the fine print there are some Mercedes models that if you
sell them in the first year you HAVE to sell it back to MBUSA. I have no
idea if this is true today but it was in recent memory.
This makes movment of hot/new models, uh, negotiable across the US/Canada
border. Clever buggers. No doubt this changes every year so the last 3 years
SL's require a letter. Clever.
Nominally you can import any US legal car into canada with a small amount
of paperwork and a couple hundred bucks. Or few hundred. Cars 15 years and
older are "pay the GST and $100 extra if it ever had A/C", in 10 minutes
at canada customs and congratulations you just miported a car. Frankly
you'll spend much longer as US export control waiting to clear the car.

MB Canada, will charge about $5,000 can to modify an SL500 2003 to
2005 to meet Canadian specs. Only after that they will give you a
letter required by the Can. Gov. to register the car. >> Stay informed about: The 2003 SL500 and all Mercedes from 2004 to 2006 can not .. |
