Post subject: 2002 Hyundia XG350 fuel fillup problems

Our 2002 XG350 (65000 miles) has developed a VERY annoying and time consuming challenge. We can't set the fill handle on the gas hose when we fill up. We have to slowly trickle fuel in or the pump will shut off.
I'm assuming there's some kind of sensor going out?

Do you have a Check Engine light too? I forget the code that was showing up
on mine.

Chances are this could be the "purge valve". I don't know if this effects
the XG350 but i have a 2002 elantra and i have the same problem where it
is very slow to fill up. It can take me 10+ minutes to put 40 litres in
and i'm not looking forward to doing that when it's -30c this winter.

The quoted price to get it fixed was around the $200-$250 cdn mark.

Chances are the same model year shares some similar parts.. apparently the
purge valve sticks open and the new one is a different design. In my
opinion stuff like this is a design fault which they have perhaps should
be calssified as a recall to those who are effected by the problem.

Why is it these days we seem to get plagued by issues which should be none
issues... We all expect to change some items but we seem to get stranger
problems all the time. I know cars keep evloving and getting more
complicated but some things shouldn't really break during the lifetime of
a vehicle.

mtshus, Had the same problem with my 2005 XG350L but I was having it with a
certain gas staition and a certain pump..... If I went to a differant
station or even a differant pump at the same station I didnt have the
problem. One time it took me 20 mins to get just a 1/2 tank of gas and no
matter how hard I tried it wouldnt take anymore, I thought maybe the gauge
went bad. I drove to the next station down the street and tried again and it
filled to the top with no problems. I have only had the problem 2 or 3 times
and it happened to be at the same staion and the same pump, so I dont know
what the problem could be.

That's generally a problem with the sensor in the pump handle. It is
supposed to sense when gas is starting to back up in the filler tube and
trip - as would happen as the tank approaches full. Sometimes they booger
up and think they are sensing fuel all the time. Very annoying when it
happens.

I'd be surprised if you don't have a check engine lamp. Your evaporative
system isn't venting properly. Although this won't be caused by a
defective purge valve, there are valves that could be sticking in the
fuel
tank, the canister close valve could be stuck closed, the evaporative
vent
plumbing could be restricted, the canister could be plugged, or the
canister filter could be plugged. A
systematic check of your evaporative vent system will need to be
conducted
to locate the problem.

It could also be the sensor in the gas pump handle. I'd try a different
station and pump to rule that out before suspecting the vehicle.
