I have a 2002 Ford Focus ZX5 that was having issues for about 2 weeks. It was running fine, then all of a sudden started to jerk and surge. It would happen randomly. I could drive 2 hours and never see the problem, other times I would make a 10 minute trip and it would happen 2-3 times. After about a week of this random issue, the car would start to stall at random. It only happened twice.
I took it to a mechanic and they could not find anything as the issues did not happen when they were trying to diagnose the issue. I drove the car home and then into work the next day. After getting out of work the car would not start, click click click sound. Got a jump, and replaced the battery. Everything seemed fine for a day or two, then the same issues started happening again. Got the alternator and battery tested, both were fine. Drove the car into work the next day and stalled out on me while pulling in. Had to push it into a parking space.
Car would not start anymore. Tried a jump, no help. Car would crank strong but not catch or start. Had someone take a look at it, got it to start by tapping on the distributor, replaced the distributor and it starts now, but it runs rough. Check engine light (CEL) is constantly on. Had the engine codes pulled, P0303 - Misfire in Cylinder 3, P0304 - Misfire in Cylinder 4, and P0102 - BARO or MAF / VAF sensor condition.
I am not very car inclined, but this is what I have tried.
- Ran the car with the MAF connected and has the issues described above
- Disconnected the MAF and got the same results while driving.
- Checked the air filter and hoses to ensure there was no cracking or blockage.
- Spark plugs are sparking, but that's all I can tell. I don't know how to tell if they are bad.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
