Can I put 225/55R16 on my TL? What will be the effect on gas mileage?
On steering? Handling?

You should make sure that their width won't be an issue.
http://www.michelinman.ca/assets/pdfs/doc_energymxv4plus.pdf shows that the
section width for P205/60R16 is 8.3", P215/55R16 is 8.8" and P225/55R16 will
be at least 9.2" on stock wheels. This means that the tires will be
approximately 1/2" (12.7 mm) closer to your fenders.

On my 2001 TL, P215/55R16 Toyo Garit HT winter tires mounted on universal
steel wheels with a 42mm offset instead of the Honda/Acura 52mm offset steel
wheels were rubbing with five adults on board. I bought a set of steel
wheels from my dealer and that resolved the issue.

Based on my experience, I would assume that P225/55R16 might fit, but
clearance will be minimal.
