Hi,

The car has ~ 70K miles. What problems are likely to occur in next 2-3 years
(between now and when it hits 100K miles)?
The reason I'm asking: I have extended warranty that will expire this
October...

Thanks,
Boris

3 things to worry about:
head gasket
head gasket
head gasket

Oh, and for shits and giggles make sure the cam belt tensioner remains
in spec. Go in and complain about a loud ticking noise around 90k
perhaps and you'll likely end up with a new one.

Knock on wood my head gasket is still fine, but it burns on my mind
now that I'm fully out of warranty.

Symptoms of it failing might include milky looking oil on teh
dipstick, sweet smelling odor from teh exhaust or evidence of weeping
on the engine block or a sweet smell from teh engine compartment.

Also, rear wheel bearings.

I think the 2001s are affected (?) i.e. have some weak bearing design.
Mine both went out at +/-25k miles (2000 Impreza) after several high
speed long distance summer trips in California.

Usually starts with a faint hum, first only at higher speeds, then
progressively
louder at lower speeds.

Can't think of anything else 'endemic' for a 2001 Forester at 70+K.

Thanks a lot to everybody who responded! I'll check these possible issues
you mentioned.
Btw, I always get the car serviced at Subaru dealer (even for oil change).
So far they replaced knock sensor ~6 months ago (it was covered by extended
warranty).

don't forget failing auto tranny - but it may happen earlier, than @
100K; more than few owners of outbacks and foresters combat subaru
dealers and SOA about faulty internal tranny gaskets. If they fail,
shifting is totally messed up. But what is even worse: tranny fluid
will mix with front diffy fluid and very often - due to a "sucking
action" of tranny pump diffy fluid will be sucked out of the housing
- leading to diffy's failure. Caveat emptor !
