Archived from groups: alt>autos>gm (more info?)

Hello all,
My engine light came on three mornings ago at cold start up. It
has been nippy here lately and morning temps are in the teens.
The engine (3800) was rough at first, but seemed to smooth out
after a short warm up. On the drive to work I found the engine to
miss at any applied load beyond smooth acceleration. Passing gear
and up hills took the engine to immediate missing. In the past,
with most any other car of mine displaying the same symptoms, the
fix was an oxygen sensor. Yesterday the engine light was off but
the engine exhibited the same behavior. Today everything was
fine. My local dealer took a look and told me that a tune up was
needed; plugs and wires. He also told me that my lower exhuast
gasket was leaking and should be replaced. He then went on to
tell me my front brake pads due for a change. The dealer wants
over $400. for the tune up and $680. if they include the brakes.
Does that seems a little excessive to anyone besides me? Why was
he checking my brakes? He made no mention of any codes that
caused the light and rough operation. I'm no stranger to the
engine department of a car, but with the weather the way it is, I
was considering the dealer repair. Are the plugs that hard to get
to on this thing? I did a water pump R&R on my 95 LeSabre this
summer and found that the motor mount had to be removed first.
Are there any surprises ahead concerning a plug change on my
2000? Thanks.

Did your dealer scan the car for trouble codes, to see why the check engine
light was on? It sounds like a broken spark plug, or spark plug wire to me,
but it could be anything. As for changing the plugs and wires yourself, it
is a very easy job. I just throw an old coat on the top of the engine, and
lay down on it to get the rear plugs, and the front's are very easy to get
at. A 2000 LeSabre would have the Series II 3800 engine, so you will need
the platinum plugs, so expect to pay more for them then the regular plugs.
Here in Canada, the regular plugs are around $2 a piece, while the
AC/Delco's (the only plug I would ever recommend using in that engine) are
around $12 a piece.

The rear plugs are best reached from the underside with the car on a lift.

Why did you take it to the dealer? Do you have too much money? That
tune-up can be done for much less by a good independent shop. I had my plugs
and wires changed for about half that price.

If the dealer didnt scan for codes, he is guessing. And he seems to be
putting
everything he can think of on the list of suggested maintenance.

The 2000 is the Series II, and is subject to the plenum failure at some
point
in time. Keep your eyes open and know what to look for.

Our Series II never had to have platinum plugs. Maybe if it were a
turbocharged
engine, that might be the case (and I dont know that for sure, nor even if
there
were a turbo option on this year model).

Everything is good advice accept the part about the plugs. All 3800 Series
II engines came from the factory with platinum/iridium spark plugs, and GM
recommends using only them. Having owned several 3800 II engines, and tried
cheaper regular plugs, I highly agree with GM. Use AC/Delco, and get the
proper platinum/iridium plug. Will cost you more now, but will benefit you
with better MPG and horsepower down the road.

Tune Up? There is no such thing on today's cars. How many miles? Most cars
list spark plugs to be replaced around 100k miles today. The engine is
computer controlled and monitored. The ONLY way to determine the problem is
to analyze with an OBDII scanner. Your dealer is NOT analyzing the problem
and is just trying to move money from your wallet to his bottom line. Check
your brake pads and determine for yourself if they are bad. Or take the car
to a good independent mechanic. As soon as they come out with a big list of
things that HAVE to be done laugh in their face and go elsewhere. The dealer
should have listed any codes on his service sheet if he did check them.

I readily admit that I do not know the situation about the plugs. When I
replaced
the plugs on our 3800 Series II, it did not have iridiums, and I didnt
replace with
them. It never showed signs of needed better plugs, but I dont argue your
point

As far as the data I have seen goes, it doesn't make a huge difference, but
having used both, I do recommend using the iridium, unless you aren't
keeping the car very long. My third Bonneville, I used some cheap Bosch
(IIRC) plugs, and the car ran better on the originals which had probably
close to 200,000 km's on them.
