Post subject: 1st in chevelle muncie

i have a chevelle with a muncie trans. i was starting out and something broke within shifting linkage just as i was about to engage clutch and that cause the car to lunge back and forth drastically. i heard a pop and my foot went right to floor. i had no clutch after that and cannot seem to get 1st gear back is it possible to break or shear a gear that way.
