I bought a used 1998 Avalon XLS in 2005, and recently I've been having problems with the keyless entry remotes. First, they seemed to drain the battery much faster than they should -- I would have to replace my battery after just a few months of usage, but my parents (who own a Camry with keyle..
« I'm no expert but it sounds like you have a short somewhere that needs fixing. I don't think a 3rd party remote is going to fix it myself. There are others on this group far more knowledgeable than.. »
« Does your car have the wireless remote or smart key system? I'm not sure what was offered on a '98 model. Is there a possibility that the remote could be using batteries quickly because of the pos.. »
« I am assuming that the battery that is being drained is the battery in the remote and not in the car itself. Carefully open the remote fob and clean the back side of the rubber buttons and the co.. »

All: I just bought a slightly used 1998 Toyota Avalon from an Uncle. So far, it's a great car! It easily passed CA smog and also passed Toyota's 160 point inspection. One question though -- when do I change it's timing belt? It's got almost 73K on it; but since my Uncle barely used it, it's li..
« I'd look in the manual. Should say somewhere I would think. Could call a dealer I guess. They oughta know. Being it has 73k, it's not a new car. How he drove it probably has fairly little to do with.. »
« If it's never been changed then you are technically overdue. It's 6- years/90K miles for 97+ (?). You've past the 6-year mark. That also tells you how little the Toyota 160 point inspection is worth.. »
« I'd go a bit further than John did Keith. I'd recommend you drain replace all the fluids (no need, IMO, to flush) and do the hoses too. 10 years is a goodly time for only 70k miles probably abo.. »

All: Does anyone have any recommendations for a CD player and radio combination for my 1998 Toyota Avalon? I want the CD player to play mp3 files per CD; and, I want either XM or Sirius radio. Thank you and Happy Holidays! Keith Lee
« I like JVCs. I don't know what the dash looks like on that car. You may want to look for a double-DIN to fill the gap. Pioneer and a couple others make D-D for large openings. »
« "Hachiroku ????" I'd recommend the Pioneer models that also have iPod or other MP3 player direct hook-up (through the glove compartment). I keep my iPod in the glove compartment most of the time, s.. »
« Natalie: Thank you for reminding me. Are there any radio-CD combination players that have a USB input vs a Firewire input? I don't have an ipod with Firewire; but, I do have an iaudio with USB. Th.. »

http://Toyota.autoboardz.com/Safe-clean-Avalon-engine-ftopict232433.html (Safe way to clean outside of Avalon engine?)
All: I have a 1998 Toyota Avalon with a v6 engine; and, I want to safely clean the outside of the engine. I first will use Gunk and let it set for awhile; then, I will wash it away with water. With my former car, a 1988 Toyota Camry, I had to keep the engine on to make sure that the engine wou..
« Why do you feel the need to clean the engine? That's only inviting trouble. »
« Keep water away from the air inlet, ignition coils, and ignition wires. Use only mist to rinse. -- Ray O (correct punctuation to reply) »
« I was told to keep the water spray so gentle that it can't pierce a hole in toilet paper (not paper towels, which are much tougher). »

http://Toyota.autoboardz.com/White-smoke-cold-startup-problem-ftopict235593.html (White smoke during cold startup -- a problem?)
All: I have a 1998 Toyota Avalon XL with around 75000 miles on it; and, I have been noticing white smoke coming out of my tailpipe when I cold start it. The smoke goes away; and so far, there are no engine problems. Is this either a present sludge problem or a future sludge problem? This car re..
« It might be condensation inside the pipe. If your coolant level is not going down, you have nothing to worry about. It has nothing to do with sludge. What is a "big Toyota inspection?" How big? I m.. »
« Check transmission, power steering, and brake fluid levels at operating temperature and make a note where they are (mark them if you have to). After a few cold start cycles, check them again. I wou.. »
« Jeff: Sorry. I meant the "160 point inspection" they gave me. What should I watch out for in case of sludge? Thanks! Keith Lee »
« Coolant. »
