1994 Ford Escort Head Gasket

I have a 1994 Escort with the 1.9L engine. I had replaced the Timing belt and the freeze plug in the block located behind the transmission bell housing. Then about a week later, for some reason ( I still have yet to find out why) it lost the water in the radiator and overheated. I waited about 15 or 20 min to add water, but it would not start. I replaced the gasket just the other day (it overheated over a month ago), it tried to start, but would not, so I used a little squirt of starting fluid and it started and ran. I let it run for about 30 seconds, shut it off. Rechecked the fluids, added some water to the radiator and tried to start it again, it "burped" and now turns over like it has no timing belt, you know, like no compression, but I can see the camshaft turning. What are the odds that it jumped timing? The 1.9L is a PITA with the timing and timing belt.
