Daughters 1994 Camry automatic transmission seems stuck in Park. Car starts,
steering wheel turns, brake pedal pressed - nothing. Suggestions?

Happened suddenly, or gradually over time?

When was the transmission fluid last changed?

Did you park it, or was it moving while moved to P, you will never
know, maybe linkage is loose, try rocking the car forward- back to
loosen gear.

Just wondering - can you put it in Neutral and then push it?

Another idea...

Maybe it will start in Neutral?

Do try to put it into neutral and push. You can do this without the
engine running for safety.

The reason for this is to make sure:

1. That it's not the parking cam locking the transmission. If so you
won't be able to push the car.

2. If the car moves, then you have problems with the tranny internals.
Fluid level is one. Stuck valve body another. etc etc

So what exactly was done during the last tranny service? Drain/refill?
Strainer change? etc And who dunnit.

He said stuck in park wont shift, probably put in park while moving, A
guess is push back and forth while someone tries to shift, maybe
linkage is wacked out, jack it up and find linkage at trans or tow it,
is there fluid in it?

==========
There's a shift lock over ride under the plastic button in the upper
left corner of the consolt near the shift lever. Pry it out with a
screwdriver (taped end) then press the button inside to release.
If that's it, then either the brake switch isn't adjusted or working
properly, or there's a problem with the shift interlock.

Sorry, I have been away for the weekend. I have learned that prior to this
the cruise control had stopped working as well. Based on that a brake switch
has been ordered. I will let you all know the results when installed. I sure
appreciate the many comments and suggestions.

=====
The way I took this is that if the brake switch wasn't operating
correctly, it could affect both the cruise control and the shift
interlock -- both require functioning brake electrical circuit.

Cruise control needs the same switch working for it to operate.

Ok, then it's probably the malfunctioning brake switch didn't activate
the *shift lever* interlock. Brake lights probably didn't work then?
Can be dangerous.
