Archived from groups: alt>autos>honda (more info?)

Hi,

My daughter's 1991 Accord suddenly quit, and it appears it has no spark. A
poster here sent me what I think is an "igniter", a 1/4" thick sealed
electrical component about 1.25" square with several electrical terminals.
I want to try this to see if the replacement component will fix the problem.
But, I am having trouble getting the component out! Should I remove the
entire distributor, or if left in the car, just what has to be removed to
effect the replacement?

Thank you,

- Phil

Take the dist out of the car. Scratch a line across the dist housing to
the head so you don't have to reset the timing. Mark where the rotor
points before you take it out, so you can get it back in right. ( Only
goes back in one way anyhow) bob

I just replaced mine on my 1990 Accord and I did NOT have to remove the
distributor.
However, I think there may a few different types distributors that have
ignitor mounted somewhat differently.
IIRC, I removed the distributor cap & rotor, then it was just the matter of
un-screwing the mount for the ignitior & sliding it out.
Switch the wires to the new ignitor one at a time, as not to get them mixed
up.
