I have a 4 speed manual tranny that is having some issues. It doesnt
seem to go into gear all the way and pops out of the gears unless i
hold the shifter in position. I recently changed my alternator. I dont
know is that has any thing to do with it. I want to avoid buying a new
tranny. Hopefully something simple

How regularly was the gear oil changed?
That's one of the best ways to maximize the life of a gearbox, yet it
seems like this service is often neglected.
I have a 1977 Toyota truck with a 5 speed that still works great, but
sounds like you need to rebuild or replace yours.
You could try using different fluids first, but generally popping out
of gear indicates excessive wear in the bearings, and difficulty in
going into gear, worn synchromesh hubs.
The alternator has no relation to your transmission.
I remember a number of years ago, I noticed a buzzing sound at the gear
shift when traveling at high speed in top gear. To reduce this noise I
added some very viscous red fluid recommended by a laundry truck fleet
mechanic and that helped. It was the consistency of maple syrup and
took only something like five per cent concentration, but I do not
believe that particular product is still available.
A number of years earlier I once tried adding STP to the transmission
gear oil and after that I could not get the transmission to shift into
low gear when starting out cold, so I had to drain all the oil and re
fill.
You could try something like Lucas transmission fix which I use in the
automatic transmission, but I suspect you need to replace or rebuild.
