My sons 1987 Cabriolet keeps losing the lower belt; the one that drives the
P.S. pump and water pump. I've checked the alignment of the pulleys, and
have swapped out all the pulleys (crank, W.P. and P.S. pump) with good
condition spares that I had. I've even replaced the water pump itself
thinking it might be seizing up and burning the belt off. We've only found
one (of the 5 so far!) of the belts, it was snapped with no signs of it
burning off. There may be some correlation between when it occurs and rain,
since the majority of the times it has happened in the rain. Anyone have any
ideas?

And it sounds too loose.

Or, when tightened, one of the pulleys gets out of alignment.

Is there _ANY_ wobble visible when you observe the belts running at
say.... 2000rpm or so?

And the power steering pump is fully secured?
Do you have A/C on this Cabriolet?
How is that belt? I will assume that it drives the alternator. I forget.

What about a rain/splash guard to stop the water affecting that belt?

Is it possible the belt is way too tight, and/or the belts being
used are inferior?

Having a cleanly snapped belt seems odd.
